As our
state continues its rapid and unprecedented growth,
Northern Nevadans are confronted with a number of
wide-ranging issues. We must address these issues
now or, in the near future, suffer the consequences of
having ignored them. Here you will find just a few
of my proposals to deal with the problems of
uncontrolled growth, uncontrolled governmental spending,
uncontrolled immigration, and less than satisfactory
student performance scores. It's time we have an
advocate that will face these problems head on.
It's time to start serving a new Nevada.
GROWTH & WATER
We
must create a long-term plan for our water supply.
Laws must be crafted to ensure that current
residents have an adequate water supply for years to
come.
Protect our neighborhoods
from casino proliferation and other adult businesses.
These establishments do not belong where our families
make their homes.
I will not support growth for
growth’s sake. Economic
diversification makes sense for our community, but
growth needs to be carefully planned and needs to be
consistent with the needs and concerns of
neighborhoods.
It's
time that growth pay for itself.
Too often current residents pay the burden for schools,
parks and roads.
PROPERTY TAXES
I
support making the cap on property taxes permanent.
I support
an across-the-board $500 property tax cut for all senior
citizens to ensure that they’ll never have to sell
their homes because their property taxes are too high.
I will aggressively fight against any effort to
impose a state income tax.
TAXES & SPENDING
I support departmental
performance review audits conducted by
non-governmental auditors, which will ensure different
government agencies aren’t duplicating government work.
I support abolishing state agencies and programs that
are no longer needed.
I will fight to protect Nevada's budget from wasteful
spending the way I do with my own checkbook!
FIGHTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
First and
foremost, we must secure our borders.
I support denying illegal
immigrants taxpayer funded privileges including driver's
licenses. No taxpayer dollars should be
unnecessarily spent on people who come here illegally.
I support sanctioning employers who knowingly
hire illegal immigrants.
No Millennium Scholarships for illegal immigrants.
ACCOUNTABILITY IN EDUCATION
Accountability:
If elected, I’ll work hard to make sure that education
dollars are spent on students – not on an education
bureaucracy. Also, we should reward excellent teachers
by paying them like the professionals they are – and
hold underachieving teachers accountable.
Adequate Resources: Our schools are too
crowded and our students don’t always have the tools
they need in the classroom to receive the best possible
education. If elected, I’ll fight to make sure that
students have the textbooks they need and that we have
the resources to build enough schools to stop
over-crowding.
Achievement: Students must master
English, math and other core subjects before they can
graduate. Our tax dollars should be spent ensuring that
Nevada’s students have the skills they need to succeed
in life.
Accommodating Growth: When new
neighborhoods are built, we must ensure that schools are
built in a timely manner to handle the influx of new
students.
A NOTE FROM TY ON
THE ISSUES:
As a fifth
generation Nevadan, and descendant of past Nevada State
Assembly members and community leaders, I do not take
this position lightly.
As many of you know, in
2003, I was asked by the United States Department of
Defense to leave Reno to volunteer for work in Iraq to
help to establish a democracy there. I leapt at the
opportunity to help spread liberty around the world, and
after seven eventful months in places such as Fallujah,
Tikrit, Mosul, and Baghdad, I was pleased with what my
compatriots and I had accomplished there. My time in
Iraq taught me many things about what is important in
life- service to country, helping your fellow man, and
devotion to a higher cause- and I wish to bring those
lessons to bear in the Nevada State Assembly.
We in Northern Nevada have many issues to confront in
the coming years and I look forward to taking the lead
in helping to deal with them. For instance, I believe
that our quality of life in the Truckee Meadows is
second to none and we need to be sure that we secure it
for the future.
Such a standard requires that we focus on ideas like
smart growth to ensure that our serene environment and
transportation corridors benefit us all for years to
come. As a former member of the Regional Transportation
Commission Citizens Advisory Committee, I understand the
importance of being forward-looking in terms of our
transportation needs.
As a Legislator, I will focus on fiscal responsibility-
after all, this is not the Legislature's money that is
being spent, but that of the people of Nevada. As such,
it is our responsibility to prioritize our spending
needs and return to the taxpayers whatever money is not
necessary for the function of good government.
Finally, in the Assembly I will be an advocate of
accountability in education. We owe it to the children
of Nevada to not only provide the resources to be
successful in school, but also the resources necessary
to succeed in life. To do so, we must have a standard by
which we gauge the success of our students to determine
how our educational system can better serve them.
Please join me today and we can accomplish these goals
together!
